Ocean on Land Technology design the new Whitby Lobster Hatchery

20th October 2022

Ocean on Land Technology are thrilled to celebrate the opening of Whitby Lobster Hatchery.

The hatchery has been custom designed and built by the Ocean on Land Technology team and includes their patented Aquahive® system and unique Hatchery-in-a-Box set-up. The project was built by their specialist team in rural Northamptonshire before travelling 200 miles north to Whitby.

Steve Allen, Business Development Director at Ocean on Land Technology said: “From the start of this unique project, we have worked closely with the Whitby team to create a custom solution on a much smaller footprint than traditional hatchery designs.”

At the opening event this week, visitors had to opportunity to tour the new hatchery and view the Ocean on Land Technology system in place, as well as meet key stakeholders and supporters.

The use of state-of-the-art Ocean on Land Technology at Whitby will allow for enhanced restocking wild lobster fisheries, as well as ongrowing and other opportunities.

Joe Redfern, Project Manager at Whitby Lobster Hatchery said: "Opening our lobster hatchery in Whitby Fish Market will have a wide-reaching positive impact on our coastline and fishery, boosting the sustainability and ensuring the marine environment is protected for future generations.

“While we have full belief in our project and its long-term success and impact, without the support we received from the Ocean on Land Technology team we would have seriously struggled to get to where we are at today.”

Steve concluded: “This has been a fantastic project to be a part of and I am proud that our technology will be used to support the livelihoods of fishermen and conservation of the local marine environment.”
